Maternity in the Rain

Berkeley Botanical Garden | March 12, 2023

Over the years, Shana and I learned that our idea of “fun” often involves getting together with friends to do a photoshoot. We knew this couple was due to give birth soon, and we had not seen them in a few months. Our trip to Berkeley to visit them luckily did not hit any traffic that morning and we arrived in time for lunch at Great China Restaurant. But there was one problem — it was raining! Not just any rain; the type of rain that makes you wonder, “Can we still do the photoshoot?”

As we left the restaurant, the pouring rain turned into a drizzle, and the chase was on! We know firsthand that photographing in the rain can be very romantic with even lighting — our own wedding had similar weather back in New Jersey in 2018!

We began the photoshoot within a desert greenhouse as the rain battered heavily for 20 minutes. There were nice heat lamps for the cacti and an interesting pink hue to the light.

As the rain subsided, we FINALLY were able to step out and get some shots in the botanic garden. The even lighting between drizzles provided a soft and lush feel to their smiles! The fog provided a mystic feel, and this location was special as it was where we joined them for their wedding the year before as part of the bridal party. It was an experience to come back and bask in the nostalgia with them before a new chapter in their lives!

We knew the shoot was over when it started raining heavily again, but not before a few last shots with the umbrella!
